Glycobiology is the study of structure/function relationships of carbohydrate molecules and the role they
play in biological systems. Carbohydrate chains attached to proteins and lipids have a marked influence on
the physical, chemical and biological properties of these molecules. Carbohydrates can act as signals or
recognition markers. We can offer the following glycobiology services
* Analytical and sequencing service for carbohydrate chains from glycoproteins, polysaccharides,
proeoglycans and other glycoconjugates. The laboratory is equipped with instrumentation for automated
release, separation, analysis and sequencing. Applications of this service are in the characterisation of
products and optimisation of product quality, characterisation of (biological) raw materials and the detection
and determination of contaminants.
* Collaborative/contract research on projects in glycobiology, carbohydrate biotechnology and
* Consultancy service in all aspects of glycobiology, polysaccharides and carbohydrate analysis. The group
can provide a current awarenessinformation service, advise on specific projects and evaluate new analytical
methodology for carbohydrates

Study of glycosylation of molecules has a number of applications including research into cell adhesion,
characterisation of glycosylation patterns of recombinant proteins, cell surface receptors and QA of raw
materilas of a biological nature. Applications in plant biotechnology include the analysis of recombinant
proteins and analysis of developmental markers (eg markers of cell fate such as arabinogalactans).
Applications in the food and bulk chemicals industry include analysis of materials and ingredients to ensure
quality and consistency of products
