Because of their universality and ability to replace or repair damaged tissue, the therapeutic benefits are thought to be limitless. This technology comprises the step-wise differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) towards multi-potent organ progenitors of the liver and pancreas lineages. Creation of hepatic and pancreatic progenitors is novel, extremely efficient, rapid (1 week of hESC differentiation), and occurs in fully-defined, serum-free conditions.
