TQRF exerts a neuroprotective role against the cytotoxic affect of AP1-40, potential as anti-nuerodegenerative agent, partly through their ability to attenuate AP-induced neurotoxicity and apoptotic features in cultures neurons. This action seems to be mediated not only by its antioxidant effect, but also by modulating intracellular signalling pathways such as caspases cascade that modulate the apoptotic process.

Since N. sativa is known to have strong antioxidant and potential chemopreventive activities, this additional benefit of anti-neurodegenerative suggests that daily consumption of N. sativa may also provide an added health benefit by reducing the risk of neurodegenerative disease such as AD.
