Girinimbine, isolated from the roots of curry leaf plant, could significantly inhibit the proliferation of human liver cancer HepG2 cells without any inhibitory effect on normal liver cells. The mode of cell death is found to be apoptosis (programmed cell death). To date, no reliable chemotherapeutic treatment regimen is identified. Those prevailing have minimal scope. Hence, girinimbine is a good molecule to be developed as a potential anticancer drug. It is specific to cancer cells (does not kill healthy normal cells).
