The company in detail

Profile

UCL Business PLC (a wholly owned subsidiary of University College London (UCL)) aims to generate income and create capital value for UCL through the commercial exploitation of the research base at UCL and its associated Institutes.

One of the leading universities in Europe, UCL recognises the need to translate its exceptional research into commercial development for positive social and economic benefit. Its spinout companies include Ark Therapeutics, Arrow Therapeutics, Multilyte, Medic-2-Medic, Inpharmatica, Spirogen, Ionix, Biovex, and Stanmore Implants Worldwide. It has also forged successful partnerships with the commercial sector including licence deals and major research collaborations.

UCL Business is committed to building more beneficial partnerships with the commercial sector. Its experienced staff members work with UCL’s researchers to create the maximum opportunities for technology growth. They assess IP both for protection and market potential. They promote, negotiate and conclude licensing opportunities. They also help academics to present potential spinout opportunities to investors for funding.

UCL Business is supported in its activities by an investment fund of circa £1.5 million and a professional infrastructure of management and staff aided by consultants and advisors in intellectual property and corporate law. UCL Business also has access to a £4 million seed fund, The Bloomsbury Bioseed Fund (www.bbsf.org), dedicated to providing very early stage capital to biomedical start-ups.

In August 2006, the integration of UCL’s highly successful technology transfer offices was completed when UCL Business was merged with UCL Biomedica, which in turn had been formed through the merger of UCL Ventures and Freemedic Plc. Founded in 1989, UCL Ventures was established to form the link between academia and industry for the development of scientifically and commercially valuable technologies arising from UCL. UCL Ventures returned over £15 million to UCL. Freemedic Plc was established in 1993 to commercialise the opportunities arising primarily from the Royal Free Campus of UCL's Medical School. Freemedic's profits since 1996, all of which have been donated to UCL for investment in the Royal Free Campus, exceeded £15m.
